Fingerprint-based background checks include a search of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division’s National Crime Information Center (NCIC) files for criminal record and arrest information. Often called a security check (possibly referring to government security clearance), an FBI fingerprint-based check is the only true “nationwide criminal record” search available. The search goes back 99 years and will access county, state, and federal conviction records.
1. Electronic Fingerprinting
Electronic fingerprinting is the process of taking fingerprints on a machine rather than with ink and paper. This produces a lower error rate and crystal clear prints, a great alternative to messy ink prints.
The fingerprints are then submitted to the specific state agency in order to process the background check. The entire process takes 5-10 minutes with results returning within 24-72 hours from the day of being fingerprinted.
Electronic fingerprinting services are only available in certain areas. Please contact us today to see if your organization can benefit from this service.
2. Rolled or Ink Fingerprinting
Rolled or Ink Fingerprinting is the process where a person’s fingers are “rolled” in ink and then transferred to paper. In most cases, applicants can go to their local police department to have their fingerprints taken. There are also many local organizations that can take applicant fingerprints as well.
The fingerprinting process can take 10-15 minutes to complete depending on how many fingerprint cards are needed. Once an applicant has their fingerprints rolled, the information is then submitted to the FBI for processing. Results are typically returned within 6-12 weeks after submission.
